For the Rag Rug workshop there are 2 sessions.
In the first session I’ll show you the technique
and get you started making & in the second session
you'll all have finished the rug (!) and I'll be able
to show you how to put the backing on.
The cost is with or without materials. Some of you may prefer to use fabric and old garments that you already have - part of the joy of a rag rug is that you can re-purpose fabric/garments that you love and would rather not have to throw away.
Almost anything is possible to use - the softer the fabric the easier it is to sew together. Jersey and knits are very easy to sew together and make for a lovely soft rug. There is absolutely no reason why you can't mix all sorts of types of fabric in the same rug, too.
All the sewing is hand stitching, except for perhaps when you’re preparing your strips.
If you decide to use old socks, for example, you’ll need to cut them on each side down to the toe
(leaving toe in tact) and then sew the ends together on the machine (or by hand!).
The photos here show different mixes of fabric and garments.
You’ll find t-shirts, silk scarves, cotton trousers, old duvet covers,
sari fabric, jumpers & cardigans (can you spot any buttons?), leggings,
socks, tights, trousers, jersey skirts.
The size of your Rag rug is up to you. The largest I’ve made is 1.3m diameter
(the one shown on the table – entirely made from socks) & the other ones
here are mostly between 63cm & 76cm diameter. Plait mats are made from
thinner strips and are more suitable for table use. They are, of course much faster to make.
Please contact me if you’re interested in doing a rag rug workshop. I usually run them for 2 people at time, with one month between the first and second sessions. The cost is £35 /person for the 2 sessions & £10 /person for materials.
